The Credit Union Impact Foundation’s Bite of Reality program gives credit unions and chapters an opportunity to make a lasting impact in their communities while helping teens develop essential financial skills.
Designed for students in grades 8–12, Bite of Reality is an interactive, app-based simulation that places participants in the role of an adult with a career, salary, credit score, family responsibilities, and everyday expenses. As students make decisions about housing, transportation, food, clothing, and other necessities, they experience the challenges of balancing a budget and distinguishing between wants and needs.
The simulation also introduces real-life surprises, such as unexpected expenses or financial windfalls, while giving students the opportunity to visit a credit union station for financial guidance.
The Credit Union Impact Foundation provides participating credit unions with access to the Bite of Reality app and volunteer training materials. Hosting credit unions or chapters provide a facilitator, volunteers to staff the event, and local student participants. Events typically serve 50 or more students and last approximately 90 minutes.
Hosting a Bite of Reality event is a meaningful way to strengthen relationships with local schools, educators, parents, and future members while promoting financial education in your community.
