International Credit Union Day is an opportunity to celebrate the credit union movement, but across Alabama, Florida, Georgia, and Virginia, this year’s observance was also a reminder of what makes the movement worth celebrating.
Under the theme A Steady Signal in a Noisy World, credit unions and chapters throughout The League of Credit Unions & Affiliates’ footprint came together on October 15 to recognize employees, strengthen community connections, celebrate international partnerships, and demonstrate the cooperative values that unite the movement.
While the celebrations took different forms, each reflected a shared commitment to the philosophy of People Helping People.
A Movement Without Borders

At Associated Credit Union in Georgia, employees explored the global reach of the cooperative movement through cultural displays, traditional foods, and research into international credit union systems. Branches represented countries including Jamaica, Puerto Rico, Norway, and Australia, creating opportunities for employees to learn about the communities and credit unions serving members around the world.

Maureen Bock, The League’s Senior Vice President of Member Experience and Care, visited Associated Credit Union to experience the celebrations firsthand.

The international spirit continued at the Greater Atlanta Chapter’s ICU Day gathering, where Debra Collins, President and CEO of Credit Union of Atlanta, reflected on her experiences with credit unions around the world. Collins also shared video messages from British credit union partners Penny Post and Commsave, highlighting their growth and the importance of mentorship and collaboration with Georgia credit unions.
Together, these celebrations demonstrated how the cooperative movement connects people across borders through shared values and a common purpose.

Cooperative Values in Action
In Panama City, Florida, credit unions gathered for the groundbreaking of Credit Union House 2 in Habitat Village, bringing the cooperative spirit to life through a shared commitment to housing and community development.

The Palm Beach Chapter’s Employee Appreciation Dinner recognized credit union professionals for their leadership and dedication to the movement. Sponsored by Corporate One, the gathering also featured a presentation on the eight cooperative principles and a $20,000 donation to the Hispanic Human Resources Council from proceeds of the Chapter’s golf tournament.

In Virginia, CeJae Vtipilson, Director of Market Expansion and CDFI Initiatives at People’s Advantage Federal Credit Union, spoke to approximately 30 attendees at a Hopewell and Petersburg Chamber of Commerce gathering about credit union history, community impact, and the cooperative spirit. Nadine Slocum, The League’s Senior Director of Governmental Affairs in Virginia, also visited RVA Financial Federal Credit Union and People’s Advantage as part of the day’s celebrations.

Meanwhile, the Northeast Florida Chapter brought credit union professionals together for its 2026 Golf Classic and Dinner, providing another opportunity to strengthen relationships across the movement.

A Commitment That Extends Beyond One Day
The impact of credit unions also received recognition from state leaders. Alabama Governor Kay Ivey and Georgia Governor Brian Kemp issued proclamations honoring International Credit Union Day, while Virginia Governor Abigail Spanberger shared a letter recognizing the vital role credit unions play in supporting the financial well-being of individuals, families, and communities.
Although International Credit Union Day is celebrated once a year, the values behind it are reflected in the work credit unions do every day. From international collaboration and financial education to community investment and employee recognition, this year’s celebrations offered a reminder that the credit union difference is more than a philosophy. It is a commitment put into action.
The League thanks every credit union, chapter, and credit union professional who celebrated International Credit Union Day 2026 and continues to bring the People Helping People philosophy to life.
