This primary season brought several developments across the League footprint, with a number of key races shaping the political landscape ahead of the general election on November 3. Our efforts focused on supporting credit union champions and building strong relationships with candidates and elected officials across both parties. Below are some key primary wins throughout our footprint:
Alabama: At the federal level, Congressman Barry Moore won the primary runoff for U.S. Senate. In last week’s primary special election, former Congressman Jerry Carl won the primary for District 1, and State Representative Rhett Marques won in District 2. These two district primaries were key to watch, after Alabama’s redistricting efforts resulted in the usage of the 2023 Congressional maps.
Florida:
Georgia: Governor Brian Kemp (R) is term-limited, making the Georgia governor race a key race to watch between Democratic nominee former Mayor of Atlanta Keisha Lance Bottoms and Republican nominee Rick Jackson. Additional statewide key races to watch include the Lieutenant Governor and Attorney General races, which are both open seats. At the federal level, U.S. Senator Jon Ossoff is seeking re-election, with Republican nominee Mike Collins opposing.
Virginia: 2026 is an off-year election for Virginia’s state legislature. The 2026 Virginia Congressional primaries, typically held in early June, were pushed to early August after the courts denied mid-cycle redistricting. Key primary races included Virginia’s 1st Congressional District, where Congressman Rob Wittman (R) will face Henrico Commonwealth’s Attorney Shannon Taylor (D) in the general election. Congresswoman Jen Kiggans (R) will face former Congresswoman Elaine Luria (D) in a rematch in Virginia’s 2nd Congressional District.
