Some FIs taking stance ‘No Mask, No Service’ in response to non-compliance

A recent article in The Financial Brand provides food for thought as credit unions continue to cope with the impact of the virus and their customers’ responses to mask mandates and social distancing guidelines.

According to the story, mega bank HSBC told customers in the U.K., “if you refuse to wear a mask in one of our branches, we may close your account.” The surprising move was in response to aggressive attitudes and verbal abuse of tellers and other employees.

“Banks and credit unions can decline to serve customers who don’t comply with requirements to wear a mask, much as they can refuse to serve someone shoeless or shirtless,” the article says.
