Alabama Sen. Richard Shelby spoke to Face the Nation recently about the government shutdown, warning it could be a lengthy ordeal. The shutdown means 800,000 federal workers have been furloughed or working without pay since Dec. 21. Credit unions throughout the U.S. are taking steps to offer assistance to their federal employee members.

An article in CNN politics points out that credit unions and banks are looking to help and says, “The Office of Personnel Management was widely criticized after it posted sample letters that federal workers could send to creditors asking for forgiveness or flexibility. Suggestions included offering manual labor in lieu of payment.”

Let’s start a conversation. Is your credit union working to help federal employee members? Please let us know by emailing submissions@lscu.coop.
