Yesterday the Alabama House of Representatives Republican Caucus met to decide who to support for Speaker of the House when the Legislature meets later this month. The position, vacated with the felony conviction of former Speaker Mike Hubbard (R-Lee), is one of the most powerful in all of state government and arguably the most powerful in the Alabama Legislature.

After several votes, the caucus selected Rep. Mac McCutcheon (R-Madison), and he will be nominated by the caucus on Aug.15 when the legislature convenes for a special session. While the official vote to elect a new Speaker of the House will not happen until then, the Republican Party controls 70 seats in the Legislature and McCutcheon is virtually guaranteed the position, barring unforseen circumstances emerging before Aug. 15.

McCutcheon was first elected to the House of Representatives in 2006 and recently served as Chairman of the Rules Committee. His district includes numerous communities in Madison County.
