Celebrating the Retirement of Steve Swofford From Alabama Credit Union

After more than four decades of service to the credit union movement, Steve Swofford, President and CEO of Alabama Credit Union, will retire Friday, October 31.

Swofford’s connection to Alabama Credit Union began long before his leadership tenure. In the 1970s, as a 22-year-old student at the University of Alabama, he joined the credit union and took out a car loan. Two decades later, he would return to lead the very institution that first served him as a member.

Swofford joined the Alabama Credit Union League in 1980, where he served in multiple roles and ultimately became Director of Public Relations. His experience at the League provided the foundation for his future leadership, preparing him to take the helm at Alabama Credit Union in 1998.

Under Swofford’s direction, Alabama Credit Union experienced significant growth, expanding from 11,000 members and 26 employees to 150,000 members and 400 employees. The credit union now serves a broad membership across Alabama, including partnerships with Mercedes-Benz U.S. International, Austal USA, Airbus, the Alabama Port Authority, and the City of Orange Beach.

Throughout his tenure, Swofford emphasized both growth and personal connection, believing that exceptional service and meaningful relationships are at the heart of every successful credit union. His leadership also strengthened Alabama Credit Union’s community presence through initiatives supporting childhood hunger relief, literacy programs, and local charities.

Under his guidance, Alabama Credit Union has been repeatedly recognized as one of the best places to work in Alabama, reflecting the culture of care and commitment he cultivated.

In retirement, Swofford plans to continue serving his community through volunteer work while also spending time outdoors, enjoying his favorite pastimes of fishing and hunting.

The League congratulates Steve Swofford on his retirement and celebrates his lasting impact on the credit union movement, his team, and the members he has served with dedication and integrity.
