Women of The League Helping Shape the Credit Union Movement

Across the credit union movement, leadership often happens behind the scenes, through the work of individuals helping organizations navigate challenges, strengthen communities, and move the industry forward. At The League, women across departments play an important role in that effort, supporting credit unions and helping ensure the cooperative philosophy continues to thrive.

During Women’s History Month, we’re highlighting several leaders whose work helps support credit unions across Alabama, Florida, Georgia, and Virginia. While their roles range from operations and advocacy to community impact, they share a common commitment to strengthening the institutions that serve members and communities every day.

Karima Freeman
Chief Operating Officer

For Karima Freeman, leadership is rooted in collaboration, adaptability, and creating an environment where others can succeed. Earlier in her career, she stepped into a complex, cross-functional project that required navigating unfamiliar challenges and coordinating across multiple teams. That experience reshaped how she approaches leadership.

“Recognize that your perspective has value and that leadership does not require you to wait until you feel completely ready,” Freeman said.

That experience reinforced a core belief she carries today. Leadership is not about having every answer, but about listening, learning, and building trust within a team. Freeman focuses on creating space for others to contribute ideas and perspectives, recognizing that strong outcomes are driven by collective effort, not individual direction.

In her role as Chief Operating Officer, she applies that mindset to ensure The League delivers practical, effective solutions that help credit unions navigate challenges and strengthen their ability to serve members and communities.

Sydney Seral
Chief Advocacy Officer

For Sydney Seral, effective leadership starts with listening – understanding both the people you serve and the environments in which you are operating. Early in her career, she helped build a political mobilization network across a large, diverse region, an experience that shaped how she approaches advocacy today.

“Every state, community, and political culture has its own rhythm and style,” Seral said. “Strong advocacy isn’t one-size-fits-all.”

That perspective continues to guide her leadership. Seral approaches advocacy with the understanding that strong outcomes are built through relationships, collaboration, and trust in the people closest to the issue. Her work reflects a commitment to ensuring that the diverse perspectives of credit unions are represented in meaningful and impactful ways.

Today, Seral leads The League’s advocacy efforts, partnering with policymakers and credit unions across the organization’s footprint to elevate the credit union voice in key policy conversations. She is energized by the momentum The League continues to build and the opportunity to shape work that delivers lasting impact.

Bobbi Grady
Foundation Executive Director

For Bobbi Grady, leadership has been shaped by moments that required balancing empathy with difficult decision-making. One experience that stands out was evaluating whether a long-standing program still aligned with the Foundation’s mission. That assessment ultimately led to the decision to move in a different direction.

“Leadership often means choosing the right path, even when it’s the harder one,” Grady said.

That moment reinforced her approach to leadership today. She stays grounded in purpose while navigating the realities that come with guiding an organization forward. It also highlighted the importance of transparency, communication, and supporting those impacted along the way.

Today, Grady channels that perspective into the Foundation’s work, focusing on initiatives that expand the impact credit unions have in their communities. Through grants, partnerships, and collaboration, she helps ensure the Foundation is not only supporting credit unions, but also responding to the evolving needs of the communities they serve.

Strengthening the Movement

Although their roles differ, these women share a common goal: supporting the credit unions that serve members every day. Their leadership reflects the collaborative spirit and commitment to service that define the credit union movement and the philosophy of ‘People Helping People.’

During Women’s History Month, stories like these highlight the many ways women are helping shape the future of credit unions, through leadership, collaboration, and a shared dedication to the communities the movement was built to serve.
