Supporting Military Members with Veterans Affairs Loan Education

A new study from Navy Federal Credit Union found that while 92 % of military respondents are aware of U.S. Department of Veterans Affairs (VA) home loans, many still lack clarity on key benefits. Nearly half of respondents did not know VA loans typically offer lower interest rates, and 55 % believed a down payment is required. In reality, eligible borrowers can finance up to 100 % of a home’s price and often secure lower rates than conventional mortgages.

These findings highlight an opportunity for continued education across the military community. Credit unions in Virginia are uniquely positioned to help close this knowledge gap by sharing accurate information about VA loans through financial counseling, community outreach, and member education. Expanding awareness can help ensure service members and veterans fully access the benefits they’ve earned through their service.

If your credit union offers VA loan education or military-focused financial programs, we’d love to feature your efforts. Share your initiatives with our team by emailing submissions@the-league.coop.
