The League of Credit Unions & Affiliates joins Alabama Credit Union in mourning the passing of James G. “Jimmy” Lankford, the credit union’s first CEO and a longtime leader in the credit union movement.
Lankford served as CEO of Alabama Credit Union from 1962 until his retirement in 1998, leading the organization from approximately 300 members and $101,000 in assets to more than 14,000 members and $87 million in assets. Under his leadership, the credit union earned numerous honors, including The League’s Credit Union of the Year award in 1964.
Beyond Alabama Credit Union, Lankford served in leadership roles across Alabama’s credit union movement and continued supporting the credit union as a consultant until 2022, concluding more than 60 years of service to the industry.
The League extends its heartfelt condolences to Jimmy’s family, friends, and the entire Alabama Credit Union team.
