Celebrating Black History in Credit Unions: AACUC’s Legacy

The African-American Credit Union Coalition (AACUC) stands as a powerful testament to diversity and inclusion in financial services. Founded in 1999, the organization has been instrumental in promoting equity within the credit union movement.

Black credit unions have a rich history dating back to 1918, when Thomas B. Patterson established the Piedmont Credit Union in North Carolina, providing critical financial opportunities for local farmers15. During the civil rights era, these institutions played a crucial role in enabling African Americans to access banking services and overcome systemic financial discrimination.

Today, AACUC continues to champion diversity by:

  • Increasing minority representation in credit unions.
  • Providing professional development opportunities.
  • Advocating for the 8th Cooperative Principle of Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion.

With over 150 credit unions served, AACUC has become a pivotal organization in transforming the financial landscape, ensuring that credit unions become more inclusive and representative of diverse communities.

This Black History Month, we honor the trailblazers who have made significant contributions to financial empowerment and continue to break barriers in the credit union industry.
