Lizeth GeorgeLast month, President Joe Biden announced Tanya Otsuka, a Senate Banking Committee staffer, as his nominee to fill the expired term of Rodney Hood on the Board of the National Credit Union Administration (NCUA).
On Thursday, which also happened to be International Credit Union Day, Otsuka testified before the Senate Committee on Banking, Housing, and Urban Affairs.
If confirmed, Otsuka would become the first Asian-American to serve on the NCUA Board. In addition to working for Chairman Sherrod Brown (D-OH) on the Banking Committee, Otsuka served as a staff attorney at the Federal Deposit Insurance Corporation, where she worked for nearly a decade on a broad range of banking issues.
In her remarks, Otsuka committed to supporting and growing small credit unions, promoting affordable financial services, and increasing access to capital.
Members of the Committee, including U.S. Senator Katie Britt (R-AL), questioned Otsuka’s stance on climate risk, Environmental, Social, and Governance policies, overdraft fees, and other efforts by the Agency to protect consumers.
