Alabama and Georgia Runoff Elections: Key Updates and Resources

The 2026 midterm runoff elections will take place next Tuesday, June 16, in Alabama and Georgia. The League continues to closely monitor key political developments and engage with candidates across both states.

Notably, in Alabama, following an earlier ruling this year in Louisiana v. Callais, the state began redistricting efforts to revert its congressional districts to the 2023 map. While a lower court initially blocked the effort, the U.S. Supreme Court later issued a final ruling permitting the use of the maps. As a result, Jerry Carl and Rhett Marques have been confirmed as the candidates for Congressional Districts 1 and 2, respectively. However, neither will appear on the June 16 ballot, as a special election will instead be held on August 11.

While congressional races will not appear on Alabama’s June runoff ballot, Republican voters will cast ballots in several high-profile statewide contests, including races for U.S. Senate, lieutenant governor, and attorney general. While all three races have been closely contested, recent polling suggests Jared Hudson (U.S. Senate), current Secretary of State Wes Allen (Lieutenant Governor), and Katherine Robertson (Attorney General) have pulled ahead in their respective bids for office.

Georgia voters, likewise, will see a crowded Republican runoff ballot. Congressman Mike Collins, a former Associated Credit Union board member, and Derek Dooley are competing for the Republican U.S. Senate nomination, with the winner set to challenge incumbent Senator Jon Ossoff in the November general election. Meanwhile, Republican gubernatorial candidates Lieutenant Governor Burt Jones and businessman Rick Jackson remain locked in a closely contested race. Both parties will also have lieutenant governor nominees determined in the runoff elections.
