Virginia Congressman Gerry Connolly Remembered for Public Service

It is with great sadness, that we share the passing of Congressman Gerry Connolly. Serving Virginia’s 11th Congressional District for over 15 years, Connolly was a staunch advocate for credit unions, championing policies that empowered these institutions to better serve their communities.

As Ranking Member of the House Oversight Committee, Congressman Connolly worked tirelessly to expand the business lending authority of credit unions, ensuring small businesses and Veteran-owned enterprises had access to affordable financial services. He was also a leading voice in efforts to protect credit unions from excessive regulation and safeguard their ability to operate effectively within a changing financial landscape.

In March, Connolly was named the 2024 Federal Lawmaker of the Year by the Virginia Credit Union Association, a subsidiary of The League of Credit Unions & Affiliates, in recognition of his ongoing commitment to credit unions. His advocacy, especially his work on fraud prevention and consumer protection, helped preserve the vital role these institutions play in the financial well-being of families and communities.

While his passing is a tremendous loss, Congressman Connolly’s enduring legacy in credit union policy will continue to shape the future of our industry. His efforts to support credit unions and their members remain a cornerstone of his public service.

The League shares our condolences with his family and loved ones.
