Strengthening Credit Unions’ Voice in Washington D.C.

The League of Credit Unions & Affiliates brought nearly 500 advocates together in Washington, D.C. for a productive week at the America’s Credit Unions Governmental Advocacy Conference (ACU GAC). The timing was crucial, as members of the Ways & Means Committee began debates on the tax package and the Financial Services Committee focused on advancing regulatory relief priorities for financial institutions.

Throughout the week, The League met with leaders from the White House, the Community Development Financial Institution (CDFI) Fund, and the National Credit Union Administration (NCUA), and hosted 72 congressional meetings. These discussions provided critical opportunities to directly advocate for credit unions and address key priorities. Thanks to the support of credit union leaders, we left D.C. in a stronger position, gaining new supporters and reinforcing existing relationships with allies on key legislative priorities.

2025 Legislative Priorities:

  • Protect the Credit Union Tax Structure: Advocate for preserving the credit union tax-exempt status to ensure continued access to affordable financial services.
  • Increase the Currency Transaction Report (CTR) Filing Threshold: Support legislation to raise the CTR threshold, reducing unnecessary filings and freeing up resources for better member service.
  • Expand Access to Credit for Small Businesses: Push for raising the small business loan exemption from the Member Business Lending (MBL) cap to $100,000, allowing credit unions to better support small businesses.
  • Modernize Credit Union Meeting Requirements: Advocate for the Credit Union Board Modernization Act, which would reduce the required number of annual board meetings from 12 to six.
  • Reform the Consumer Financial Protection Bureau (CFPB): Support efforts to increase accountability at the CFPB, including a push to raise the threshold for CFPB supervision to $15 billion.
