Florida Gov. Rick Scott today announced the appointment of Republican Jimmy Patronis to replace Jeff Atwater as chief financial officer in the wake of Atwater’s resignation before his term ends. Atwater, who has been CFO since 2010, will become a vice president at Florida Atlantic University.

The swearing in ceremony will be in Tallahassee on Friday, June 30, and more details will be released later this week. The governor made the announcement at Captain Anderson’s restaurant in Panama City, FL, which is owned and operated by the Patronis family.

Patronis currently sits on the state panel that regulates utilities. He was a member of the Florida Legislature for eight years before Scott appointed him to the Public Service Commission.

Patronis said, “I am honored to be appointed as Florida’s next CFO. I would like to thank Gov. Scott, and I look forward to continuing his legacy of job growth and economic prosperity for our state.” He added, “As Florida’s next CFO, I want Florida to be the place where government does its job fairly and predictably so workers can find great jobs at great businesses.”

This is one of the most high-profile appointments Scott has had since he first took office in 2011.
